Why would I pick the desert to celebrate my 40th birthday?
Well for starters, it’s awesome. If you’ve never been (or even if you have), take 3 mins to watch this video:
I’ve been going to Moab for almost half of my entire existence.
Every trip brings something new and offers a fresh perspective on life. Sometimes, you go there lost and wind up finding yourself. Other times you think you’ve got it all figured out and the desert will remind you that the possibilities are truly endless.
So why come here for my 40th birthday?
What draws us into the desert is the search for something intimate in the remote.Edward Abbey
To be honest, at first I wasn’t going to do anything. I felt that I had reached a culmination of several major changes in my life. And these changes had been taxing and I really had no desire to plan, coordinate and go through yet another major event.
After all, I just married the love of my life last year. This was a good move (obviously), but it did take a lot of time and effort to plan that wedding. And it’s certainly different being married and inheriting a whole crew of Vietnamese family members.
Meanwhile, my family endured the entire ordeal that was my father having a giant tumor removed from his chest. Thankfully, the operation was successful and he is recovering well! But it was, and continues to be, a test of our family’s strength, a testament to our love for one another and huge reason to be appreciative for all that life has afforded me in my four decades of existence.
On the business front, I left the corporate world and, after freelancing for the past three years, I’m once again preparing to start my own software development firm. My workload has continued to increase and I’m generating more business than I can handle, which is fantastic. But there is plenty of work still to be done.
As you can tell, these are all good things and I really didn’t think I needed a big throwdown to usher in a new era of DNoe… The new era has already begun!
BUT… Amy was having none of that! We must celebrate my 40th in proper fashion!
And of course she’s right. It is important to take time for fellowship with my amazing friends and reflect on all that I have to be thankful for. As we get older and more geographically spread apart, it becomes critical that we invest time into the cultivation of our relationships whenever we have a good excuse to do so.
SO, let’s do the damn thang!
Don’t be afraid of the cold – we build BIG FIRES and keep each other warm by stoking the fires in our souls.
Don’t worry about getting lost – trust that you will always find your path and that you will be surrounded by others that will help you along the way.
Don’t be reluctant to enter the wild – shed your inhibitions and bring your appetite for adventure – because it awaits you in the natural beauty of the desert.
You should not see the desert simply as some faraway place of little rain. There are many forms of thirst.William Langewiesche
Finally, I want you all to know that I feel very blessed that you have chosen to be a part of this celebration. THANK YOU for making this happen. It truly does mean the world to me!
Much love my friends. I can’t wait to see you all very soon!
